An Excursion into Sustainability: Year 3 and 4 Learn at the Port Phillip Bay Eco Centre
Today, our Year 3 and 4 students enjoyed a fascinating excursion to the Port Phillip Bay Eco Centre, an experience that brought their classroom learning to life. This hands-on visit, led by Year 3 and 4 teachers, was a core component of the Year 4 Growing For Tomorrow programme, a curriculum initiative that embodies our mission to cultivate socially and ethically aware citizens.

At Sholem Aleichem College, we believe in providing outstanding education that is both engaging and purposeful. The Port Phillip Bay Eco Centre, with its alignment to our values, provided the perfect setting for our young learners to explore critical concepts of sustainability. Students were captivated as staff from the centre shared their scientific expertise, making complex ideas about waste management and environmental responsibility both accessible and exciting.
A highlight of the day was undoubtedly the session on the importance of worms. Students were fascinated to learn how these incredible creatures play a vital role in creating healthy soil and breaking down waste. This practical insight helped them understand how even small actions can have a significant impact on our planet. This knowledge directly supports our goal of nurturing 'mentsh'—individuals who are contributing and fulfilled members of their local, Jewish and global communities.
The excursion successfully connected the theoretical knowledge from our classrooms with real-world applications, encouraging our students to become active and responsible tenants of the planet. It was a wonderful example of how our community of learners, from students and teachers to our partners at the Eco Centre, can work together to foster a deep love of exploration and learning.
